Pickstown didn't receive snowy black and white tv reception until the 1950's. Until then, news and entertainment was provided by school activities, newspapers, the movie theatre, and the radio.

For local, regional, and national news the town was served by five primary newspapers. The Mitchell (Daily) Republic, the Omaha World Herald, the Yankton Press & Dakotan, Sioux City Journal and Minneapolis Tribune provided afternoon and morning delivery.

News, Sports scores, the latest Country-Western, Rock-A-Billy, and that new thing called 'Rock 'n Roll could be heard on KORN radio from Mitchell, WNAX, Yankton, and KELO, Sioux Falls. KOMO, Oklahoma City, and XERF, featuring Wolfman Jack from Del Rio Texas could be counted upon for late night reception.
